UK DEFENCE INDUSTRY SUPPORTS GOVERNMENT POSITION ON ENSURING LEGALLY BINDING ARMS TRADE TREATY
ADS calls for a treaty that is effective, implementable and widely adopted
ADS today (Thursday) supported the comments of Rt Hon Alan Duncan MP, Minister of State for International Development speech “Time for a treaty: Why the arms industry must have global standards” at the Institute for Strategic Studies, as the Minister called for a legally binding Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).
Since 2003, the UK Defence industry, with other European Defence industries has worked closely with governments and NGOs to ensure that the ATT becomes an effective mechanism for implementation for higher international standards in the defence export arena. The underlying security and humanitarian principles that drive the need for an ATT are consistent with the UK Defence industry’s strong commitment to corporate responsibility.
Rees Ward, CEO at ADS, said:
“For many years the UK Defence industry has been committed to establishing an effective, implementable and widely adopted ATT recognised by Governments and NGOs. Industry has therefore supported the desire of the UK Government to negotiate a legally binding Arms Trade Treaty to regulate the global trade in conventional arms.
“Gaps in the global regulatory landscape need to be plugged. As momentum builds toward final negotiations at the United Nations during July, UK Defence will be supporting our government in creating a treaty that will plug these gaps, while also incorporating the underlying security and humanitarian principles that drive the need for an ATT in the first place.”

PERSE SCHOOL WINNERS OF UK NATIONAL ROCKETRY CHALLENGE BLAST OFF TO NASA
Perse School of Cambridge beat 19 other teams to become national Youth Rocketry Champions, and will face US and French champions at the Farnborough Airshow in July
ADS today (Thursday) is delighted to announce that Perse School from Cambridge is the winner of the 2012 UK Aerospace Youth Rocketry Competition (UKAYRoC) sponsored by Chemring Group and Rolls-Royce, and have won an all expenses trip to NASA in Houston, TXUSA.
Held at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground in Lutterworth, Leicestershire, 20 teams - of 3 to 5 teenagers each - from England, Northern Ireland, and Wales had to design, construct and safely launch a rocket carrying two raw hen’s eggs. The rocket was required to reach a height of exactly 800ft and weigh no more than 650 grams. The payload of eggs then had to return safely to the ground within 43-47 seconds using only a single parachute.
Perse School came first with their rocket reaching an altitude of 803 feet in 40 seconds with their payload landing unbroken.
Perse School, as well as winning their trip to NASA, will also now face the finalists from US and France at the Farnborough International Airshow on Futures Day, 13 July.
The 2011 UK Finalist,WorksopCollege, came second to the US team in the international finals held at the Paris Airshow last year.
Graham Chisnall, Deputy CEO and Managing Director Aerospace at ADS, said:
“Perse School has provided another excellent display of innovation and talent that has come to embody what the Rocketry Challenge is all about. UK Aerospace companies, like our sponsors Chemring and Rolls-Royce, have been involved in the challenge by providing advice and expertise to the teams, solely for the purpose of inspiring these young people to become the engineers of tomorrow. As ably demonstrated today on the fields of Leicestershire, the next generation looks set to continue the successes of the UK Aerospace industry which is the leader in Europe.”
Keith Wilkins, Head of Design Technology and team leader of Perse School said:
“Today’s result is totally down to the efforts and hard graft of the whole team - testimony to what innovation and no small part of perspiration can achieve! The prospect of the trip to NASA is a great prize for the team, but first we’re going to concentrate on winning the International Rocketry Challenge at this year’s Farnborough International Airshow.”

At the Soldier Technology Exhibition in the Earls Court Conference Centre, London (21-24 May, 2012) UK based survival equipment specialists, BCB International, will unveil a new cooking fuel made from sugar beet which enables soldiers to make a brew and cook their rations in the field twice as fast.
As BCB’s Fire Dragon Project Manager, Derek Taylor, explained the new fuel, represents a major advance on existing solid fuels for cooking:
“Fire Dragon is ethanol based and has the consistency of candle wax which means that it is easy and safe to transport. It burns clearly and cleanly with a zero carbon footprint in its production and use.
“A number of other products on the market are toxic and sold with health warnings. For instance, some give off cyanide derivatives when burnt, while others release formaldehyde in certain situations.
“Comparative tests with the currently issued Hexamine fuel show that Fire Dragon would enable service personnel to waste less time cooking and spend more time getting on with their job. Indeed the test results show that Fire Dragon boils twice as fast as Hexamine.”
Notes to Editor:
For over 50 years, BCB have designed and manufactured a wide range of quality military equipment. Their excellence has been recognised through two Queen’s Awards for Export Achievement as well as the acclaimed Wales Innovation Award 2010.
BCB is approved to ISO 9001:2008 International Quality Standard.
AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, is pleased to announce that the first prototype of the AW169, a new generation 4.5 ton light intermediate helicopter, successfully completed its maiden flight yesterday. The AW169 programme is on schedule to achieve basic civil certification in 2014.
The AW169 was flown by AgustaWestland’s Chief Test Pilot, Giuseppe Lo Coco, Test Pilot Giuseppe Afruni, and Flight Test Engineers Massimo Longo and Stefano Rognoni at the company’s Cascina Costa plant inItaly. The helicopter performed as expected during the flight which included an assessment of the helicopter’s general handling and basic systems. The first prototype will be joined by two more aircraft later this year and a fourth prototype in 2013.
Bruno Spagnolini, Chief Executive Officer, AgustaWestland, said:
“The AW169 is the only new generation helicopter in its category to be launched in decades, so this is an important milestone for the continued enhancement of AgustaWestland’s product range and for the development of our family of new generation helicopters.”
He added “With both the AW169 and AW189 now flying and the AW139 established as the market leader in it class, we are able to offer the market the most advanced range of helicopters across the 4 to 8 tonne weight classes in the shortest possible timescales. Operator will for the first time ever, in the helicopter market, be able to benefit from the advantages of a family concept of three new generation helicopters.”
The AW169 is part of AgustaWestland’s family of new generation helicopters that includes the AW139 and AW189 models. These helicopters all possess the same high performance flight characteristics and safety features and share the same common cockpit layout, design philosophy and maintenance concepts. This approach will deliver real cost savings in areas such as training, maintenance and support for existing operators of the AW139 who add AW169 and/or AW189 helicopters to their fleets.
Launched at the Farnborough International Air Show in July 2010, the AW169 has rapidly found market success, logging orders for more than 50 units so far from customers worldwide. A versatile, new generation twin engine helicopter, the AW169 has been designed in response to the growing market demand for an aircraft that delivers high performance, meets all the latest safety standards and has multi-role capabilities.
The AW169 incorporates several new technology features to provide the highest levels of safety and operational benefits for its customers. New generation technologies are incorporated in the rotor system, engines, avionics, transmission and electric power generation and distribution systems. Latest technologies include an APU mode capability and touch screen cockpit devices. The AW169 is set to be the most advanced and cost effective helicopter in its class forEMS, SAR, law enforcement, passenger and offshore transport and utility missions.
WFEL – the world-leading tactical military-bridging specialist – is exhibiting at this year’s Eurosatory show in Paris to demonstrate the capabilities of its suite of tactical military bridging systems.
The company has a three-strong product portfolio which is currently in operation with over 40 armed forces worldwide.
Its flagship system is the Dry Support Bridge (DSB) which is the world’s longest unreinforced tactical military bridge that can span gaps of up to 46 metres.
Deployed in less than 90 minutes by 8 personnel the DSB, with its military load classification (MLC) of 120, can traffic the heaviest of main battle tanks in use today.
A £40 million order has just been secured for the DSBs from the US Department of Defence (DoD) and production will start later this year.
The order is the latest development in the company’s relationship with the DoD which has seen nearly 100 DSBs ordered worth in excess of $450 million.
Originally an aircraft manufacturer, WFEL launched its first tactical bridging unit on to the international market in the 1970’s with the development of the Medium Girder Bridge (MGB).
The MGB is a lightweight bridging system and over 500 units have been sold globally. Today it is often used in emergency relief missions and recent use includes deployment in Japan following the devastating tsunami and earthquake in 2011.
The third system in WFEL’s portfolio is the Air Portable Ferry Bridge (APFB) which was designed for light forces needing increased mobility and flexibility. The APFB – which incorporates a ferry system – is easily transportable and is used in a variety of military and civil emergency applications.
Max Houghton, Sales and Marketing Director of WFEL, said:
“Meeting senior leaders from armed forces at exhibitions such as Eurosatory is essential to ensure that the capabilities of our bridging systems are known the world over.
“Armed forces need to be sure they have the tactical infrastructure in place to rapidly overcome any water or dry-gap obstacles standing in the way of both military and disaster and emergency relief missions.
“Our bridges provide the ideal solution to these problems and ensure operations can be carried out quickly, safely and efficiently.”
WFEL is exhibiting on stand number 440 within the UK Pavilion at Eurosatory.

Opened by the Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology, May the 1st and 2nd saw HELO-T at Naval Air Station in Yeovilton, Somerset. Helicopter, Engineering, Logistics, Operations & Training was the 2nd ADS event of this nature that this year incorporated the launch of the UK MoD’s Rotary Wing Capability Strategy as part of a Capability Air Littoral Manoeuvre (Cap-ALM) Industry Briefing Day.
Over the 2 days the 200+ industry and government delegates met, engaged and listened to the leading stakeholders from the UK MoD (including the Head’s of Capability for ALM, JTES and Combat Air), the Department for Transport and Chief Constable Alex Marshall who leads the National Police Air Service. Unfortunately the Emergency Medical Services representative withdrew at the last minute.
Over 25 capability demonstrations from both industry and the Navy were presented with both Navy and Police helicopters from Avon & Somerset and Dorset on site for delegates to view and engage with the crews. Hosted by Yeovilton’s Commanding Officer, HELO-T culminated in a superb black-tie dinner for 150 HELO-T delegates, which, chaired by ADS, was preceded by a candid Question Time event that consisted of 4 panellists from the MoD and National Police Air Service.
Supported by the lead sponsor’s Agusta Westland, the aim of the HELO-T was to generate an experiential and inclusive engagement opportunity for the UK’s rotary community to gather, engage, share, debate and learn: the initial feedback suggests that HELO-T more than delivered.

Secure data destruction provider, Data Eliminate Ltd, has been drafted-in by ADS, the trade association for the UK Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space industries, to destroy confidential data held on the organisation’s decommissioned electronic media.
Data Eliminate deployed its mobile destruction vehicle to ADS’s London headquarters where a number of hard drives were shredded under the supervision of ADS Chief Executive, Rees Ward CB.
The on-site data destruction service provided by Data Eliminate carries the CESG CCT Mark certification and is approved by the Ministry of Defence (DIPCOG). It is designed to provide a means for companies to completely remove sensitive data from electronic storage devices and end-of-life IT equipment in the security of their own premises.
Rees Ward witnessed ADS’s hard drives being shredded to corn flake sized particles (15mm x 15mm). On completion, Data Eliminate provided ADS with a Certificate of Destruction and Waste Transfer Note. All waste residue was sent for environmentally responsible recycling.
“Data Security is an increasing concern for those, like our own member organisations, who work in sensitive areas and have intellectual property and customer data to protect. We urge such organisations to ensure data on end-of-life IT equipment is properly destroyed by a government approved data destruction provider,” affirms Rees Ward.
Julian Fraser, Director of Data Eliminate explains:
“An incident of data loss can lead to fines from the Information Commissioner of up to £500,000 and catastrophic damage to a company’s reputation. Our security and environmental accreditations mean that organisations such as ADS can use our services with confidence.”
Data Eliminate runs an integrated Management System which is externally audited to the following International Standards:- ISO 27001 (Information Security), ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environmental).

UK exported £8 billion of defence and security goods and services in 2011. This compared with £8 billion in 2010. Defence exports were down by £400M at £5.4 billion but security sector exports increased by £600m to £2.6 billion.
In 2011 UK gained over 15 per cent of the world defence market, ahead of Russia and France. US led the market with 35 per cent. Measured over a ten year rolling average which smoothes fluctuations caused by major contract awards, UK retains 20 per cent of the global market and is the second most successful exporter behind the USA.
Lord Green, Minister for Trade and Investment said:
"These figures show the strength and breadth of this important high technology sector and its contribution to advanced manufacturing trade. They are all the more encouraging in the absence of a major defence platform export from UK last year, illustrating the remarkable breadth and depth of the UK's defence industrial base which is rich in SMEs. The increase in the security sector reinforces a consistent picture of year on year growth. Growth is also particularly strong in the cyber security area. The UK Government will remain committed to support UK industry as it continues to excel in this very fast growing global market, which is also so critical to our own national security."
WFEL, the Stockport-based defence engineering group, has announced a £40 million new order.
The company has won a contract from the US Department of Defense (DoD) to supply a further tranche of its next-generation military bridging system.
The order, which is the fourth phase of a framework agreement originally agreed with the US in 2000, is for the supply of new WFEL Dry Support Bridges (DSB).
To date, the US has ordered almost 100 DSB’s, worth a total value in excess of $450 million.
The business, which earlier this year unveiled a £200,000 investment programme into its Stockport manufacturing facilities, remains one of the few prime contractors to the US Department of Defence which is wholly UK based.
This next suite of bridging systems will go into production in 2012 with the delivery of the first units expected in 2013.
The agreement follows just four months after the firm secured a £60 million order with the Swiss armed forces, also for its DSB systems.
Over the past four decades the firm has sold over 700 of its bridges to 40 different armed forces worldwide.
Its systems are used by armed forces in conflict zones and civilian disaster emergency relief operations.
Ian Wilson, WFEL’s Chief Executive, said:
“The US has been a close partner to our business for over a decade during which we have established ourselves as their primary provider both of new systems and support services for their existing bridges.
“These links with the DoD, together with the UK MoD, have been key to building our reputation internationally and unlocking opportunities with new markets for the DSB in territories such as Switzerland and Turkey.”
